This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall mediate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Joshua 1:8

Scripture memory is one of the most effective ways to grow as a disciple of Jesus and make other disciples of Jesus. God has principally revealed himself to his people through the Scriptures. Therefore, God’s Word is the lifeblood for every Christian.

Memorizing scripture allows us to meditate on God’s Word together. Beyond reading or reciting God’s word, we let it take root in our hearts, meditate upon it and ask the Holy Spirit to transform us as the Scriptures renew our minds.

Planting God’s Word deep in our hearts will give us God’s vocabulary to speak of himself and we can be sure that we are true and authentic witnesses of him in the world around us.

All our verses in 2019 focus on the gospel. Verses in the first half of the year tell the gospel message and will be useful in sharing the gospel with others and also in preaching it to yourself. Verses in the second half of the year highlight implications of the gospel or gospel truths. These are blessings that flow out of the gospel.

Memorizing Scripture as a family is a wonderful opportunity to equip your children to be disciples of Jesus. Older children (2nd-5th grade) will be working on the same passages as adults. Younger children (preschool-1st grade) will memorize one verse a month.

Read the passage several times without trying to memorize it.

Repeat the passage out loud, working on one phrase at a time. Begin and end with the reference.

Write the passage down.

Review regularly. Go over the verses as you exercise, fold laundry, drive, wait in line, etc.

Partner with someone else to recite the verses each week.

For more information about memorizing scripture, send us a message. Someone from the Team will get back to you soon!
