Deacon Ministry

Who Are the Deacons?

  • We are members of CrossWay Community Church who have been affirmed by the congregation and trained to do the work of a deacon.
  • We are a ministry of mercy and grace that expresses itself in good deeds. We are called to serve  those within our congregation, members or regular attenders, who are in some form of critical need. Often we help with needs that go beyond the capacity of Care Groups and we minister to those who are not yet in a Care Group.
  • Practically, our help might take the form of arranging meals, rides, or light home repairs. We might come alongside someone in financial distress to aid in assessing the situation, to provide counsel, and in some circumstances to provide limited financial assistance.
  • Our desire is to show God’s love by trying to help people in unexpected circumstances and to provide practical care to the body of Christ.

Our Goals for Those We Seek to Serve

We recognize that each situation is unique but as a given situation warrants we would seek to:

  • Encourage you in Christ. Our only hope in this broken world is Jesus Christ and the promises He has given to the household of faith.
  • Meet immediate needs. If you are met with an unexpected critical need, we will seek to provide appropriate relief.
  • Help develop life skills. When applicable, we want to help you glorify God in the call He has for your life. Sometimes, this means growing in things like budgeting and improving job interviewing skills.
  • Promote long-term stability. With any sort of aid, our desire is to assist you to a point where you no longer need our assistance.

Financial Assistance

  • The deacon budget is provided through contributions given by the people of CrossWay, budgeted by the Executive Committee, and affirmed by the congregation. We are accountable to the congregation to be wise stewards of the resources God has given through His people.
  • As funding is limited, we direct financial support to the neediest people within the congregation.
  • Requests will be considered based on basic living needs. Each request goes through a review process sometimes involving several steps.
  • Financial assistance is granted with the hope that our assistance will be short-term and no longer needed once the situation improves.

What We Expect from Those We Seek to Serve

  • We encourage everyone to be actively involved in the life of CrossWay, especially on Sunday morning and through participation in a Care Group.
  • We expect honesty and full financial disclosure when a need has financial implications.
  • We encourage everyone we serve to seek Christ’s help as they walk through their hardship. We also encourage accountability within our congregation.
  • In some situations, hardship is the result of poor or sinful choices. Part of seeking transformation is a willingness to engage in self-examination and to work in cooperation with the Holy Spirit to change one’s heart and behavior to be more in line with God’s Word.

What You Can Expect from Your Deacons

  • We will seek to listen to you, understand you, and encourage you in Christ.
  • We will regularly pray for you and your circumstances.
  • We will humbly seek to address practical needs through offering resources, practical and spiritual counsel, and accountability.

How Do I Know if I Qualify?

  • We are called to serve the people of CrossWay Community Church, either members or regular attenders of at least three months who are committed to our local church as evidenced by faithful attendance, ministry team participation or financial giving to our church mission.
